Type, buildings and grids

The assignment my students are working on now is to create a logotype.

One of the strategies I suggest is to work on a grid of squares and create letterforms in a very structured fashion.

While walking near my office recently I noticed these beautiful letters created with circular tiles. These are built into a step at the entrance of a building that is currently being refurbished. I am interested to see if the tiles remain in place once the building is finished.

The second row of images are letters painted within the brickwork of an old warehouse that is now apartment buildings, and that follow the same idea of letterforms within a grid.
