espn magazine April 29, 2013

The design of a magazine with such great subject matter—sport—must be tremendous fun.

But not all of ESPN magazine is about looking good, even though it does just that. Two of the articles in the late April issue focus on a subject that seems to permeate so much of sport. And that is drugs.

The first discusses an illegal synthetic marijuana drug know as Spice, widely used by young athletes and reported in detail through a feature story about the Alabama football program. The second concentrates on Tyrann Mathieu, a highly skilled and successful LSU player, struggling with drug addiction but hoping to be picked in the NFL draft, despite his history with drugs: failed drug tests while at LSU and an arrest record for possession of marijuana following his successful re-enrollment to LSU after being kicked out of the football program a year earlier.

Serious stuff for sure, but the pages look great too.
